The Second Meeting of the Witches

Monday June 21st

You should have read Act IV: Scene I.
Use what you have read and the comic strip version of the scene provided to you in class to answer the following questions in your English BOOK:
  1. List THREE foul ingredients that the witches put into their cauldron.
  2. What is meant by the line "double, double, toil and trouble?"
  3. What does this line suggest about the witches' character/personality?
  4. How does Macbeth greet the witches in this scene?
  5. Macbeth, even though he has murdered a man and ordered his best friend be murdered, still thinks the witches are evil. He confirms this when he says, "Though you untie the winds and let them fight
    Against the churches; though the yesty waves
    Confound and swallow navigation up;
    Though bladed corn be lodged and trees blown down;" Select ONE image used in these lines and explain HOW this tells us that the witches are evil. Make sure you include the line in your written answer.
  6. List the THREE apparitions that the witches show Macbeth.
  7. Why doesn't Macbeth take the apparitions and their warnings seriously?

Add a short scene to the play that takes place between the three witches directly after their second meeting with Macbeth. Your scene should include stage directions, indicate setting and convey the witches' character in their tone of voice, choice of words and body language/action.
The witches should discuss what they've just shown Macbeth, how they feel about it and what they intend to do next. Remember to consider how evil you think they are when making decisions about these aspects of their behaviour.
You will write the scene in your ENGLISH BOOK and it should be a minimum of 3/4 of a page.

Homework Task
Choose ONE of the visual representations of the witches from the pictures below and explain how it conveys that the witches are evil. Hint: use the "looks like" section of the Y-chart that we completed in class last week.
